In a recent Nelson Star article, journalist Darren Davidson wrote about how developers Farhad Ebrahimi and Graham Kwan of Hallō Properties have responded to public concerns regarding their $500-million development of the Granite Pointe Golf Course in Nelson, BC.

The proposed Hallō Nelson development

One of the first changes the duo made was dropping the controversial name, The Dodger, which was intended for the golf course. This decision came after locals pointed out the negative connotations tied to the area's history with draft dodgers and a previous debate over a statue proposal. "We agreed this naming didn’t align with the values and commitments we’re making to honor and elevate such a precious community asset,” the developers were recorded as saying.

The article continues by saying that despite the name adjustment, opposition to the project continues to mount, with thousands of people signing a petition on Change.org. Additionally, two websites have emerged with mandates to fight against the development: HellNoHallo.ca and HellholeNelson.com.

The latter site takes a satirical approach calling the development a “playground for the privileged.” HellNoHallo.com takes a more serious approach with a mandate of "Housing for all, not for the few," that emphasizes community and working with the developers on a plan that's more inclusive.

In the article, former Nelson city councillor Paula Kiss, voiced the frustrations of many residents, stating, “People are alarmed that Nelson is for sale to people who won’t be part of the community.” Key concerns include the ongoing affordable housing crisis in the area, especially as Hallō plans to offer fairway-side homes starting at $1.95 million.
